Default Backing up/ archiving Weddings

Hi,
I started doing weddings a year or so ago, and customers seem happy

However, I am currently burning files on to DVD to back them up (taking up 3+ dvds per weddings)
Im not keeping original captured files after the dvd has been signed off/ approved after 90 days. But even so, I seem to be using up so much space...!

I was just wondering how every one went about backing up during editing, and in the long term?

Thanks.

Speaking purely for myself. On my projects I have an external hard-drive for each paid project. At the moment you're looking at Toshiba external 1tb hard-drives at under £100. That's my archive. On the earlier projects they were digitized carefully and fitted on a 200Gb drive, now the 1tb drives are just as full as almost everything gets digitized.

That's my way of doing it because, with events, you sometimes get requests for a 5min "best of" for some trade show or presentation up to a couple of years later. I don't know if that happens in weddings.

With the price of EHD's falling all the time, you can pick up 1 and 2 TB EHD's cheaply now. I have two of them at the moment and they are very good. Just run them off USB and they take up so little desk space. Another option might be to install a second IHD into your computer just to give you that extra security.

I just leave on the ole 1Tb drive nowadays, in the past i would keep the tape master (I still do) and back up the projects files to DVD, normally one after the end of the year with all clients work. (weddings)

As for backing up - you should keep everything totally everything you shoot for every paid project.

I have a pc stuffed with drives for that. Backing up to dvd is a pain - HD - just drag and drop and no loss.

Keep very important stuff on 2 drives for extra safety if you dont have a raid 1 array.

Wedding Videos ? Stuff em ! I want to see / make divorce videos, funerals, births, sex change ops, suicides - anything but weddings.
Sorry for the detour, but I got a stitch reading this.

Now here is a man with a sense of humour

Cheers,
GDR
