Vegas V's Ulead -
No contest really. Over the years I have used a broad range of Non Linear software based editors. I now use Sony Vegas for one reason. It is simply the best out there. This is based on it's abilities and performance. The nearest to it is Adobe Premier Pro which although very close is just outperformed by Vegas. The other problem with Premier Pro is that it is the big brother to standard premier and in the proffessional industry there are stigma attached to working with it. The industry does not recognise Premier as a pro NLE and therefore because Premier pro is associated with it, people tend to snub it too. It's awful as it still is a very powerful application but as I said, Vegas edges ahead because of its sound mixing roots and capabilities and also the fact that Vegas is easier to pick up for complete novices.

As to other's such as Ulead, pinnacle and so on... None of them have ever really been able to cut the mustard as it were in my books. They are all either too simple or too user friendly or just plain difficult to use. As a pro I cant afford to waste time figuring things out. I need everything at my fingertips and Vegas is the only PC based edit app that does it for me the way I like.

Vegas is the one for me. I tried a few others, (not fcp) and found them all limiting in one way or another. Premier was buggy and couldnt deal with many file types i remember.

Vegas can cope with anything on the time line, it has ace sound stuff, excellent key frameable effects and a very intuitive feel to it.

You can try vegas for free too.

well i am currently filming a 18 month project of a class of students doing their ma, this will involve indoor and outdoor, news style you might say. however i am also writing up and story boarding new stuff which i want to look more filmic. my budget is prob between 300 and 800 but i would prefer the former figure, i was looking at a canon 850i but i just dont know.

Well, I would spend as much as you can using the crap in crap out argument. Your camera defines the quality of your video, the bhetter that is the better your results 'can' be. If you have aspirations above once a year shots of old people and children falling over at xmas, as you clearly do, then 3 chip models are worth investing in.

For more controlled work also consider a camera with easilly accesible manual controls.

I am completely biased here but if you want to risk a s/h camera the old sony vx9000e is a great camera for creative work. Low light performace is not startling and it's electronics are not the best but being shoulder mount it is lovely to handle, but not subtle as it is big. As I said tho' it is the camera I use for the most part.

I also have a small DV camera and that is much better for grabbing video oppertunistically or when you dont wnat to be noticed.
