Nice effect! Here is an effect idea that I nicked one of from Irishmarks party movies last year.
Software called "morpheus" is custom built for this kind of stuff. Just export two stills from your vid, morph them with morpheus and then re-insert to your timeline.

Yeh I agree the best way to go would rather to morph the cat and the women rather than layers or fades you get a much better result.
