I am guessing this in reply to my post...
I am quite lucky that at university we get cinematographers in to teach us how to light. A week is not long enough, its takes years and years but the basics are there. To be honest I find it common sense, you want to set your subject apart from teh background, so contrast the light between the two to give your image some punch.
www.cinematography.net is a good source of information, as are the forums at
www.dvxuser.com and of course you can study films all you like. I often find a film and copy its lighting to achieve a certain look, no harm in learning that way.
