thanks for the info.
one theme you keep on touching on is patience - how so? do you mean in it taking a while to transfer from camera to PC?
what exactly does "encoding" entail? sorry if that's too simple of a question. i've actually been editing for the past several months and have progressed enough that a jump to the "next level' is needed (better editing program, better PC rig, better camera). that said, i haven't got all the jargon down pat just yet. case in point - just today i learned about CCD and why i would want 3 of them. LOL.
what i like to do is view these user videos and try to get ideas as to what is possible. that's why i'm always asking what camera people use and what editing program they worked with, that way i'll know when i'm making somethign the only thing that is limiting me is my expertise/talent and not my tools. i don't think i'm ready for the professional grade equipment that Alan used, but it's nice to have something to shoot for.
still, entertaining short, Alan.

In my case this means trial an error getting the shot right. 68 takes fluffing your lines etc etc what exactly does "encoding" entail? |
If you encode high def to WMV9 it means taking 10 hours of waiting around doing nothing for a twenty minute clip. still, entertaining short, Alan. |
That's the name of the game. And I means that in a, sort of, selfish way. I do this for me because I enjoy it. If I come up with something someone else likes too, it's a bonus. Thanks for the comments.

You can get the same quality (as far as I'm concerned) by using plain vanilla Premier Pro 1.51 because it's the same cineform codec. The reason I use Aspect HD is the realtime editing it allows. Now you can live without that as it doesn;t speed up the final export. The main reason for buying it is the 'crippler'.
You cannot capture high def in plain vanilla Premier Pro (at the moment at least) and use the clip in other packages like After Effect or Particle Illusion without the full plugin. Possibly a con, but it is a good product and I don't regret buying it.

Remember that 60 second video I posted last week (the one advertising the forums?) I filmed the same thing over and over in a so many different angles, voices and intonations... yet I'm still far from happy with the result. If I had the time, I'd edit it more...

thanks for the replies, cleared up a lot.
i think it's a good idea that i won't really start getting serious with video editing until i build my dedicated editing rig (thus, having 2 separate PCs). while one is encoding i can just play around on my general-use PC.
i tell you, seeing these user videos are certainly inspiring. this is like when i first learned to play guitar. sure, you pat yourself on the back once you learn about 10 chords and learn a song or two, then you hear Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page and you see just how far you can go on the thing.
so you keep practicing after seeing this "whole new world". i thought there wasn't that much more to amateur video editing outside of Movie Maker, now i'm seeing just what exactly is possible (although it's obvious that many of you are "pro-amateur"). i'm soaking in all the tricks and things you guys are doing, adding to my knowledge.
sorry to hijack your thread, Alan, hopefully you take it as a compliment that i was so inquisitive as to the method to your madness.
