just beck here wondering if mark ever returned, had a feeling he was back for a short while. have to be honest he was for me the user who both informed and entertained me on these forums some 3 years ago.

sure mark was a hard to impress, but thats what made me come back, these days I feel rather lazy to link a video here, not exactly sure why.
I know nothing about youtube, even less about video

I agree with this 99% ... however, right now I am such a novice that I wonder if my feedback is of more harm that good?

That said, I always try and feedback and make the necessary caveats about my general newbieeness where necessary.

You may be a novice at making films, but you've almost certainly watched thousands.
Most of us make films for people to watch/enjoy not necessarily for other filmakers.
Your comments are worth every bit as much as the next man's (even if, or maybe especially if, you're not able to say why something works/doesn't work)

This is a low volume, high quality forum. It's not unusual for films to take a few days or even weeks before any feedback is received. Believe it or not, people aren't sitting there waiting for your latest masterpiece, but will usually browse the user vids as and when when they have time to spare to give the vids the attention they deserve.

If you're concerned about making a criticism which is thought of as "ignorant", (a) being ignorant is nothing to be ashamed of unless you're unwilling to learn, (b) anyone who disagrees with you're view has to explain their own view - and there's no reason why theirs should be any more valid than yours, and
    (c) (if you're a real wimp!) you can always start "I'm a newbie to filmmaking and I'm prepared to be persuaded otherwise but....."

My problem is I don't have enough internet to watch long videos. Hopefully this will change some time soon. I don't see what will change it yet as I can't have unlimited DSL where I am, but I'm optimistic about the future none the less. Then I can watch all the videos and give all the critique I want all day and night!! People will beg me to stop!!! And then I'll watch some more and critique some more. The internet shall become my TV.

I can't express how much I agree with Mark W. I posted my short film in other forums, watched as the "read" count rose to over 100, and received no feedback. I came here, and was the recipient of positive, well thought out criticism. My intention is to view the films of those people who post them, and provide feedback when I feel it will be productive.

When doing an artistic work, watching what the others are doing is as beneficial if not more than actual practice or experience. So in the end, we all benefit from this. Also, explaining things to others also help us understand them more, forcing us to break down what may seem more of a natural process, thus allowing us to have even more control over it.

I just wanted to point out something that I think needs to be clearer. I love positive and encouraging words as much as the next guy, but what really helps me get better is when people point at what I do wrong or what I could improve. So when criticizing the work of others, I prefer to actually focus on the "bad" and try to help there. Sometimes, with internet being as it is, it can be taken the wrong way, sometimes I might use the wrong words or syntax, keep in mind that while I'm fairly comfortable using english, it is not my native language, nor do I live in an english speaking environment or country for that matter. So by all means, don't ever think my goal is to hurt, because it's not.

Others prefer to congratulate and I'm fine with it, again, it's always nice when we see our work is appreciated by our peers.

Another thing, even if it sometimes may seem that I don't, I know that I can be wrong sometimes, I believe in what I do, and I believe it to be true when the time I do or say something. If you ever think that I'm wrong, please explain it to me and point out what's wrong in my reasoning, this way I can learn and get better.

Anyway, thank you for making this place as enjoyable as possible, the work of the admin, I think, is truly appreciated by the members. I for one am grateful there is such a place, and I couldn't ever find another one such as nice as it is here.

I just wanted to add that there might be some times when I'm off the boards, just doing my thing somewhere else. But I always keep coming back here to post my latests work and at such times, I make sure I stick around and also post feedback and criticism about what others do, regardless of the skill level, whether or not it is to encourage and help a newbie, or congratulate a nice film made by some more experienced member. And as said above, even if the person is way more experienced than I am, he or she still could benefit from the advice of a reasonnably educated viewer.
