| | hook intro needed for youtube.
Mr Fingercuff.
I will let you into a little secret to having a impact on youtube, and I ripped this from all the Hollywood blockbusters, especially The Matrix.
Right at the start of the video pose a question, one which will grab viewers who would not normally sit in for a 9 min video, put with it a very select piece of footage to relate to the question, your choice I don't need to tell you.
Matrix asked a question to seed peoples minds to watch the film, the question was "what is the matrix", simple and it worked.
I can lay money on this, it will make a difference, its a youtube thing, leave your promo title till the end.

Thanks for the advice Mad Bomber. I did notice on one of your films that you quite literally do ask a question at the begining (your million + vid) so this is obviously something that works and will have to consider for future 'tube' projects.

It was a gamble putting the quetion plus a hook scene which is the main action sequence right at the start, before youtube the video did start at the intro song as I was emulating the TV series as much as possible.
When I started on youtube I had very little success, the videos just sat there, and even today those videos after 18 months have very few views, I have tried everything, adjusting keywords, sending it to people in far away lands, posting them on forums.
The model train video was my third video posted, the encoding is crap but it still grabs them.
I have a video Potato Head which could do much better if I made a little intro piece, maybe its worth giving it a rework, just as a social test.
My all time greatest video Snails Day Out is a complete youtube flop, thats the one all my video friends here in Oz said would work on youtube, well its gone nowhere.
Youtube is very thickle, very difficult to make a impact no matter how good the video is. Mark W "bum video" had all the hallmarks of a youtube mover and shaker, I made comment on that right at the start, for once in my life I was right.
A friend at work set me a youtube challenge, I started as a joke, but right now the joke has turned into something quite serious.
Just a question Mr Fingercuff, what generation of film did you grow up with, is your video ability self taught ?
The Mad Bomber.

Great stuff. But I say don't go looking to make a youtube friendly video. You may well end up facing a compromised video.

Tentboy was intended as more of a festival piece whilst Zombie Proof (see the other thread) was made with youtube in mind. I think its good to have a mixture of both.
In answer to your question rollingstock - I grew up on 80's cinema, far too many films to note that I loved. I studied film but didn't really have an interest in the stories they were trying to make us tell so I did my own thing, made a few shorts using their equipment. Haven't stopped shooting since then (8 years ago now). I would probably consider myself self taught.

People tend to get obsessed over YouTube. For me, the icing on the preverbial YouTube cake are the people guaranteeing 100,000+ YouTube hits for a fee. For me, YouTube is and never has been about great videos. That's not to say that there aren't some fab little videos, but they're so diluted by the sheer amount of dross that having a 'hit' doesn't really mean that much.
Now the counter argument to this is that if you become a fabled 'Partner', you'll start to earn. But that's where the link between great videos and popular videos starts to get broken. Rather than creating a video that entertains, user tend to create and upload videos that will attract people. There's a difference between an entertaining video and one that attracts hits, and I think that's due to the way in which videos are rewarded.
There's no doubt some real hidden gems on YouTube that simply don't get a look in. I don't understand the desire to have a YouTube hit, but then I guess that's more to do with my way of thinking! I'd much rather have an award winning or critically acclaimed video than a popular one, but then that's probably why I'm not a millionaire!
I hasten to add that I don't think seeking hits is necessarily a bad thing. Who am I to say what good or bad?

Marc, you bring up some very interesting points in your post about youtube, I will reply to this in the off topic area as its getting very much a new topic which I would love to hear more about from other users.
I do work in the real film industry 17 years now on Hollywood projects shot in Australia and overseas, I also have video as a hobby for 25 years being involved in a small group of video makers who were all 30 years my senior in a club called North Side Camcorder Club.
I hopefully can comment seeing both sides of the barbed wire fence, in a way there is a blanket over this fence now, its called youtube, or google video or whatever.
All of a sudden anyone can become famous, the audience has a new interactive toy, your little home video may be viewed by millions.
Youtube is just like Hollywood in some ways, same sorts of networks, some major hubs, but it exists without a protective one way shell, and if your video is crap, the audience has their say.
Hollywood can make a crap film, cut a great trailer, and flog it until it makes a return, you can't do this on youtube.
There is a powerful force at play, it gets back to networking, not video, another key word here which only exists on a network is virus.
I will explain my ideas in the off topic area I invite all to have their say.
I have never heard of paying to get 100.000 views, please tell me more.
