Hi Folks,

I've made a quick video using raw footage and a 3D model in 3ds max. It's the familiar TARDIS from Doctor Who landing in my street.

I wanted to make it more challenging by having it spin and land rather than the usual fade in fade out dematerialisation effect.

Agreed - I didn't bother with this because I was just seeing how PF Hoe motion captured my raw camera footage movement. It takes that long to render that by the time I did it I realised I'd forgotten the shadow but hey ho - you live and learn.

Well I picked up and discovered all the techniques myself spending time learning packages like 3ds max, after effects and others. There isn't a crash course in this, but it took me about a year and a half to get to where I am now, and I'm married with kids - so I didn't have a lot of free time.

I reckon you could pick it up, with plenty of spare time, in about 6 months.

There are loads of forums for 3d work and this forum is excellent for learning after effects and the like when you need to ask questions.

I'll try and dig some of the better 3d forums up and post them here.

Hi. Not bad. You need to work on the lighting that you set up in your TARDIS scene in max, as the lighting does not match the live plate. The sunlight looks to be coming from the top right, but the TARDIS looks dark (almost black, esp on pause near the end) on the sides facing the Sun but bright on the sides facing away from the Sun. I would put your key light representing the Sun in the correct position, a less intense fill light on the opposite side and another mild fill light underneath to represent the bounce light reflecting off the road etc. Plus you need a soft shadow from the TARDIS on the ground, not hard as it looks cloudy.
