Thread: avi. files for Sony Vegas

  1. #1

Default avi. files for Sony Vegas

I tried to import an avi. file into Vegas, but it doesn't play the clip. Does Sony not play avi. files?

It should do I have compiled a movie with it that has .avi .wmv. and .mpeg formats altogether

unless its some codec issue or some bizzarre thing

a simple trick if the file is large etc i often use windows movie maker to convert a large avi or mpeg to a wmv movie file

this reduces things from like 70 meg clips right down to under a meg

not much quality loss etc - but again depends on what its being used for etc

but in general an avi should be ok for vegas

Is there a program that can convert avi files into wmv. files. Cause my windows movie maker is really slow.

You can render to wmv files in vegas. Just go to the file drop down and click on render as and you should see a list of the diffrent file types you can render to.

It says that there's no template that supports this file.

I have found vegas to be very accepting of nearly all codecs. It certainly shouldnt have any probalem with avis of any size and certainly shoudnt need things to be swapped to wmv.

It sounds like you may be short a few codecs, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_codec

I suggest downloading a codec pack, installing and seeing if that fixes things.
    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Nimo_Codec_Pack.htm

MMCompView will show you what codecs you have installed,
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/mmview.html

Gspot is usefull as it will tell you lots of things about a video file including hte codec it uses.
    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

If gspot tells you the file uses a codec that mmcomp shows you do have installed on your pc then the problem may lay elsewhere but odds on it's a codec thing.

I had the same problem. For me, the Morgan Multimedia Codec solved everything very neatly.

It's true that .avi files will be much larger than you would probably prefer. The AVS Video Converter is a good investment as it converts almost anything to anything. www.avsmedia.com

I downloaded the codec and it still didn't work, but i'll try to get the converter. I just don't understand why it won't play.

I'm having the same problem as Diana and you apparently. I downloaded the morgan-multimedia thingie and installed it, but do I have to do anythign with it? Cuz it didn't seem to change anything. It won't play wmv. or avi. files. I'm very upset, cuz I can't seem to do anything on my Sony Vegas program if I can't get video to work. :( Can anyone help?
