Default A1 cam mic probs, please help !!!

    Hi all,

I have just been filming some wildlife and noticed that the audio has a constant hiss all the way through it. I can hear the birds singing fine but with this constant hiss. I've changed the settings on the EVM NC1 supplied but to no avail. I'm currently using CH1- MIC-+48V on input 1.

    Any Idea's

    cheers

What cam / recorder are you using. MOst camcorders have very poor mic input stages and they are commonly hissy.

All I can suggest is bump the gain right up to get the signal good and high nad then cut out the hiss in the edit with a gate.

    Hi Mark,

I'm using the Sony A1E, with the external mic. I just realised that one of the channels was set to high so I'm going to try again.

Can you recommend a different mic.

    Cheers

I think a decent shotgun mic is th etool for the job. These are like zoom lenses for sound and pick up best in the direction you point them in.

Unfortunately decent mics are never cheap and shotgun mics are amongst the most expensive. My expirience of cheap ones is that they are rubbish.

The cepaest i know off that is a good performer is the mke300, 150 ish

I think there is also a Rhode at a similar price.

Next it is the ME66, 400 ish http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/publi...heiser_me66kit

Even more cool is the mkh 416 at 900 ish http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/publi...er_mkh-416p48u

I spent ages bidding on e bay for a 416 but never had enough cash, but bargains are to be had. Eventually I got a sony c-76 for 200 quid off ebay, a good deal for a mic that was 900 new.

I know others who post here are far more expert than me on mics so maybe they will offer advice too.

    Hi Mark,

Cheers again.. Looks like going shotgun is the way forward.

I see you use Vegas 6. I was looking at buying this as my next editing choice. I have been using Premiere 6 and have been happy with that but as I have now gone HDV I was looking to upgrade. Whats your opinion on Vegas...

    Cheers

Vegas - intuitive flexible interface, accessible to the beginner but pro tools if you need them, frustrating (sometimes) render times as there is no gpu acceleration, untouchable stability and you can put almost anything on the timeline and it'll edit. Great k frameable effects, 3d compositing. Some dont like the look saying it is not grown up enough, nuts to them I say !

I have tried my install of vegas on HDV files and it edits them fine and that is on an xp3000 box. No extra h ware or s ware required.
