Premiere 6 - Video length Dilemma

Hello, I'm having problems with certain mpg files over a certain length in time. For example I have an mpg file that is 16 mins long but when I import it into premiere its only 39 seconds long. If I try and edit the duration of the clip the speed drops down and plays in slow motion. Does anyone have any ideas of whats happening?

Try re-encoding the video in another application before importing to Premiere.
