Default Storing Mini DV footage on a hard drive

As a general guide can anyone tell me how much hard disk space a 10 minute download of footage from a mini DV Camcorder will take up. No point in me buying an 80 gig hard drive if that can't hold more than 15 mins of footage

    thx Rich

The DV bitrate is 3.6 Mbps, therefore a minute of DV material takes up about 200 Megs on your hard drive, and an hour - approximately 13 GB.

OK - thx- that's actually not as bad as I thought.

I thought the Hi def bit rate (at the prosumer end) was the same as the sd dv bit rate, innit ? Hi def just uses tra frame compression, much more efficient.

true but if you do the neceesary conversion from an MPEG2 stream to an editable AVI it gets a lot bigger.
