If it's just for home/family use, you can get one of those. Although MiniDV is preferable, in terms of quality.

It all depends on what camera, some lowend miniDV cameras are not as good as the Digital8. I've used both, not to much difference, it is noticable. I'd go with a Digital8 if you previously had a super8 cam.

You mean Hi-8 (or Video. Super8 is film.
But not all Digital8 cameras support Hi-8 playback, only the higher end models, which cost as much as a good MiniDV.

Digital8 creates the same data stream as DV, same codec.

I don't know what you mean by that, Zaskar, but I hope you're not saying D8 and MiniDV are equal in terms of quality...

    Not even at consumer level.

Hmm, I am suprised as the codec is identical. Clearly the comparison is fraught with ifs and buts but I still think a d8 is same quality wise as cheapo dv of similar vintage. Even hi8 aint that bad but capturing is obviously the problem there.

    Quote from http://www.internetvideomag.com/arti...8vsS-video.htm

"As mentioned earlier, Digital8 is the same basic technology as DV. They use the same compression schemes, the same digital transfer technologies. Since Digital8 and DV employ the same digital signal-processing scheme, Sony was even able to use the same three-piece chip set for the new 8mm digital technology as for the 6.5-mm format. The big difference, and really the only difference, from a technology standpoint, is that Digital8 uses 8mm tape and DV camcorders use miniDV cassettes. "

Clearly this was d8 versus dv sometime back. I am sure a new dv camera will better an old d8 but cameras of a similar age it appears will perform similarly.
