Thread: Program to lower CPU usage?

Default Program to lower CPU usage?

When I go to capture video the preview window can get kinda screwy. My CPU usage can jump from 50% to 90%. I'm thinking that this is the problem. I once heard of a program that could close out ever processes, program anything that wasnt in use or something like that. and that right before you capture video you should run it to close everything out. Actually any video i play on my compture can sorta jump like that when the CPU usage jumps like that. Does anybody know what I'm talking about or know what I can do?

    Default

    RAM: 1 gig
    Processor: Intel Pentium 4 HT
    um its HP

um What else do you want to know?

The processes that uses the most CPU is

    System Idle Process
    Winlogon
    explorer
    and sometimes NAVAPSVC.EXE

The ones thats user name is 'system' I cant stop. If I could only get those programs to turn off then I could just capture my video with them off. Then turn them back on when I'm done....My comptuer is fine when I am not caputring video....

What was that word you could type on 'run' and it would tell you all the programs that started up with the start of your computer?

msconfig works for me , try googling for another way.

EDIT: I just remebered, if you can't find an easier way to get to it, Tune Up Utilities has a feature to disable some programs and services from starting up. There is a 30 day demo available from their website.

I use a prog called Ultimate Troubleshooter. It's very good, identifies absolutely eveything running including nasty stuff, and has bags full of features. On top of that you can set start parameters to manual, auto or disabled on every item. It does advise on the results of doing that and although it includes all operating system start ups, it lets you know if it's an integral part and when to leave well alone.

Saved my ass a couple of times. Well worth its money. ($35)
