    Default Shooting a backplate?

Does anyone know exactly what shooting a backplate involves? I think I read somewhere it is used to mask out parts of a scene like removing someones head. Any info or if you've used it would be appreciated.

I believe a backplate is when you shoot a scene you shoot it without the characters/subjects also, just the background. It can be used for many things. Just like you thought.
