Thread: How to draw graphics on a video?

Default How to draw graphics on a video?

Let's say I want to put in an arrow to point at some object.

I can see I could draw one is say photoshop and drop it in as an image. Presumably I would need to create the background as transparent - not sure how to do that...

But doesn't Vegas, or one of its many FX, have a drawing tool?

The next thing would be to make the arrow track for a few seconds.

Export as a 32bit PNG (24 bit png does not allow for the alpha (transparency) channel)

Not really, but if I needed to do this entirely withing Vegas I'd use one of the following options:

    1. Use a text generator and use WingDings or other "graphics" fonts
    2. Use a solud colour (or a gradient, or a noise or anything, really) and create a mask in the shape of an arrow.
    3. Use a graphic of an arrow and mask around it (or use ChromakEy if the background is a solid colour)

Grazie, Midnight or vkmast will probably come up with a few other possibilities....

No motion tracking in Vegas, I'm afraid. (But you could use HitFilm Express to do ths)

Many thanks Tim. This is what I suspected, having failed to find any way to do it

Isn't there a way to place a graphic on consecutive individual frames? Then one could position it with a slight movement. A 1/2 second sequence would need 25 insertions. I am amazed there isn't a plug-in for this. I looked up Hitfilm Express but that is another complete video editor which is the last thing I want

    I managed it as follows

Apparently photoshop (CS2 I use) creates a 32-but PNG whenever you save a job as PNG *and* it contains a transparent layer. There is no "transparent" option I could find for a layer but setting opacity to zero did it.

You can use track motion or pan & crop to move the graphic using keyframes.

With keyframes you position the graphic wher you want it on frame 1, move forward a good few frames, move the graphic and create a new keyframe.
Sony interpolates the position of the graphic for the intervening frames. Generally start with keyframes at the extremes of the movement then add additional ones in between when the interpolated position is out of step with where you want it to be.
