    The only similar thing I could think of is a gorillapod but it's even more clumsy and I doubt it holds as tight as the current version. I didn't like the angle so much by the way. You may want to experiment with it a bit.

    Thanks man - I think I might try with the camera pointing straight out the front - this would give people a better view of the scenery instead of a large part of the shot being consumed by a static image of me and the wing - having me in the frame is great for understanding mistakes, but it isn't great for scenery

    The large image of you is essential for putting you in the scene. It doesn't need to be used for a large part of the film, but it absolutely must make frequent, but short, appearances.
