Default Best video formats, project and render settings for best possible youtube quality?

    Hey,

I'm trying to learn some video editing on my own by experimenting mainly, but now there's one thing that bothers me and that is that my video quality is not optimal.
I'm mostly making music fanvideos/tributes of TV shows or movies so I download my footage which are normally mkv or avi files (most are 1080p which I prefer of course, some are 720p). At the moment I always render them to mp4 because neither mkv or avi seem to be supported by Sony Vegas Pro but that's an immediate drop in quality already. So what's the best video format to render to? And what settings should I use for the best possible result on youtube? I'm not very technical so that's why I'm asking and I'd love to be able to make videos of higher quality.
