  1. Default Is it possible to fit HD mpeg2 video onto a Dual-Layer DVD disc ?

I have 1920x1080 HD video. I am wondering if there is software that is available to put this onto a Dual Layer DVD disc and have regular DVD players play it?

Or (and this is what I think is true) , - when you burn it onto a dual layer dvd, it is downconverted anyway to SD so it will play on a regular dvd player. And, the only way to keep it HD is if you use blue ray.
    Is that right?

I read about something called AVCHD. Is this the answer, and wouold you need a special dvd player to display it?

    Default

The only way to play HD is via Blu-ray.

You can add some HD to a physical DVD and some (but not all) Blu-ray players will still play it.

DVD players only know about standard definition MPEG2. End of story. There is nothing you can do to make a regular DVD player play HD material - they simply don't know how.

If you want to use DVDs then you have to down convert to SD for DVD authoring.
