    Default When is More Less?

"Experts" recently confirmed that watching HD content on anything less than a 15" screen won't give it an edge over SD. In other words, HD doesn't look better on a screen less than 15".

We all know that SD looks pants on High Def screens, so why oh why do Channel 4 insist on broadcasting E4 at such a low bitrate? At best DVB programming is equal to the analogue signal, but has the edge in my opinion as the broadcasts are (normally) in widescreen. But the quality used for E4 is simply awful and there's an annoying blue line displayed down the left side of the screen (normally covered by overscan).

Do we really have to put up with lower quality for more choice? What hope do we have for HDTV? There'll be a few channels that broadcast at high bandwidths, then a million other channels squeezed into the rest.

I think the experts haven't really told the whole story, either.
At normal TV viewing distances, 3 to 5 meters, you might need a 125" display to tell the difference between DVD and HDTV. The average human eye can't focus well enough to resolve pixels much smaller than 2.4mm at that distance.

YOu're not suggesting that HD might be *gasp* an overhyped piece of technology are you?

I once started a thought-provoking (honest guv) thread about this sometime ago in these forums but I think it's been purged as I couldn't find it through search.

It'll be there somewhere (I broke the forums a few months ago and didn't replace the search database!)
