Thread: How to become an Editor?

Default How to become an Editor?

I am a Sixth Form Student at Teignmouth Community School, and have an assignment to create a Business plan. I need to know these things:

How much should Video Editors earn in a yearly salary before bonuses?

Can they receive any tip or bonus from their client, meaning they get paid on top of their wages?

How many hours a week would be expected for an Editor to work on a medium scale production?

What working conditions and benefits should they receive, such as getting a personal laptop for side work or receiving a Company car?

What is the most common software to be use when editing?

Firstly, what makes you think they all get bonuses? Salary will depend on many things, including location, since London is likely to pay more than other places, your speed and experience and the type of editing you are doing. There is no set rate of pay for editors since not all editors are the same.

Of course they 'could' but the real question is "do they?". In a corporate environment (working for someone as an employee) then it's possible that bonuses are in your overall package, but if you are an independent editor you're unlikely to get any bonuses as part of your day to day work. Most clients want a quote and generally want to negotiate it even cheaper, so the chances of getting bonuses on top are limited. Don't rely on getting bonuses if you're setting up an editing business because they really aren't that common. In fact, the biggest problem is actually getting paid after finishing the job! Some people like to play games and stretch out the payments as long as possible.

Define medium scale production. Some editors will work longer than others. The max working week is now defined by EU law and is what? 45 hours? As a 'contractor' or independent production/editing company there is no limit to the number of hours you work. I could be working 20 hours one week and 80-90 hours the next then nothing the week after.

If you work for a company then you'll get the benefits they offer, which included paid holidays etc. If you are creating a business plan to work for yourself you get NOTHING. No body offers to give the self employed person any benefits, no paid holidays, no equipment (you're expected to have your own) and you get to pay for your own car.

Why would a company give you a personal laptop so you could do 'side work'? That's not in their interest.

There are generally three, depending on what company you're working for and what they have standardised on.
    Avid
    Final Cut Pro
    Premiere Pro.

There are others (such as Sony Vegas), but they aren't in anywhere near as much use as these three in the professional environment such as ENG, TV Programming and Movies.
