Question Relationship between recording resolutions and field of view?

Hi all, I was struggling to find a sub-forum which this was relevant to, so I had to place this here. I have a question regarding how resolutions and field of views relate. I have noticed a trend (with my Samsung phone and GoPro White Edition video camera) that an increased resolution results in a narrower field of view. However when I looked on various sciencey websites they had equations and whatnot that stated that, given image sensors with their set amount of pixels, a wider field of view is proportional to a higher resolution. What gives? What is the actual relationship between these two things?

The field of view is determined by the lens, the physical sensor size and the distance between lens and sensor. The resolution doesn't really play a primary role.
