Default Holding your Shoulder Rig by the Matte Box vs Using the Handles?

Recently after seeing some BTS videos I noticed a lot of the camera opperators hold the mattebox instead of using the handles on the rig, movies like Elysium and Terminator Salvation used this technique. What's so much better about holding the mattebox vs just using the handles? Does it effect the mood of the scene? Please help me out, thanks!

Are you in a position where you are able to try it out with the kit? Some things are far much better experienced then simply told.

Yes I have a rig that I can try it with, but can you explain the reasoning behind it? I just cant think of any other reason than to just add extra camera shake to your shots.
