Default 3D Rotating Text in Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12?

    Hello,

My name is Michelle and I'm new here. I'm also new to video editing in general, so please be gentle.

I'm currently working with a trial version of Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12. I would like to animate some text and make it rotate/spin in 3D.

Online tutorials tell me I need to choose "3D Source Alpha" from the compositing mode icon on a track and then set a value for the Y axis and some keyframes in the track motion dialogue box. The videos show a long menu list when they click on the compositing icon, but mine only shows two things: "Multiply (Mask)" and "Source Alpha."

I've done searches both online and in the menus and help sections of Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12, but for the life of me, I CANNOT find how to do this!

WHERE on earth can I find the "3D Source Alpha" selection or how to do this? Or cannot it not be done in Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12??? It's very frustrating to watch all of these YouTube tutorials and NONE of them match what I see in Platinum 12!

    Thanks for your help!

You'll find "3D Source Alpha" in Vegas Pro.
If you buy the "Suite" version (beware of the one-disc OEM version) of Movie Studio Platinum 12, it includes an extra Titling and Text application called New Blue Titler EX, which gives you the ability to create animated 3d style text. You may need to check with NewBlueFX support (or peer support forums) to get a right Titler EX version. Some of the early ones may be faulty.

Thanks so much for your help!

I think it's a version issue too, but when I read the descriptions, it seemed like Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 SHOULD be able to do this.

Just to be clear, I'm not really creating 3D text. I just want to rotate/spin 2D text on the Y axis. Do you know if this can be done in Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12?

Where are you seeing the description? Can you provide a link? It's possible that there is some other software / plug-in bundled that will do this?

However, the method you are describing requires "3D Track Motion" which is only supported in the Pro products - see here:

Rotation of 2d text around the Y axis? I think:
At it's simplest, the graphic (containing the text) could be resized between two keyframes, keeping the same height, but just changing the width (i.e. squishing the sides together). And perhaps emerging with the text appearing back to front.
It may even look better if the original rectangle (i.e of the text graphic) also changes to a trapezoid, to give the impression of perspective/foreshortening.
I am not a Vegas user, but suspect there are various ways to do the above.

Thanks guys! I finally got it!

I used the Spin transition from the 3D Blinds transition.

My text is 2D, not 3D, but I added enough of a drop shadow and blur to my text so that it DOES have some depth and dimension and doesn't just look like flat text on a screen or page.

I wanted a nice transition when the text appears on the screen, which is where the spin comes in. I finally figured out how to apply it, then stretched it out to 4 seconds on my 5-second intro, Essentially, the text does a half-spin as it comes into view. Then I faded the whole clip out during the last second. It looks very nice.

I'm a video newbie and have just been struggling with this so much. This is definitely NOT my forte. But I don't want this video to look like a first-grader did it either. I just some something that looks nice and has a professional feel to it.

I was asking for 3D effects, but I knew I just wanted the 2D text to spin like 3D. I'm new to this and not really explaining myself very well...

But now it's time to shut down the PC, get out and get something to eat. I've been at this for literally HOURS. (Am I the only one who doesn't eat for hours when working on a project?)

    Thanks for all your help!
