    Default **mac advice**

Hey peeps, just need some advise. I am looking to switch to Mac from PC and looking at buying 27" iMac.

I film at 60fps in 720P (sporting) or in 24fps 1080p for interviews.

The PC I have is 8GB Ram i7 (laptop) and often find it is quite clunky when I edit with a lot of transitions in quick succession.

Would 3.2GHZ, 16GB ram be enough, or do I need to go to 32GB RAM?

I do this as a hobby, so would prefer to save the $$ for programs if I can

    Thanks

Wait a minute, Before you spend the money consider the following

8GB with I7 should be plenty for your needs, Let's talk about the footage, how it is stored and your video editor project settings before we spend loads of money on a new system.

Agreed. It's likely a small investment in an SSD would solve problems.

I'm running 12Gb Ram on a mid 2011 iMac, I bought it with 4GB and added another 8GB from Crucial. Installing 16 Gb Ram will make a big difference over 8GB. 32GB over 16GB wont be such a big difference unless your running loads of apps at the same time.

On the latest iMacs the 21.5" versions have no option to upgrade your own RAM but the 27" versions still do.

If you get the 8GB model from Apple it comes with 2x4GB sticks, adding another 2x4GB sticks from crucial will cost an extra 60, which is 100 cheaper than getting the 16GB from Apple.

I can also highly recommend checking out the trial version of FCPX.

Don't let David lure you completely to the dark side...

Your laptop has plenty of grunt for a hobbyist. At most all you'd have to spend is 200 to give it some serious grunt...probably much less then that and just make a few free tweaks to your system.
