Default Lightsaber decapitation | Visual Effects Breakdown

    Hello again.

I decided to do third VFX breakdown before starting my next "proper" film (trying to get one out before summer). What we have here is the decapitation scene from my Star Wars fanfilm called "Jedi Knight, Exile". I chose it because it was relatively simple effect that worked out quite nicely in the end. I used no tutorials for it, but luckily enough the first idea I had turned out to be good enough.

One again, it's not step-by-step tutorial that any new After Effects user could utilize in few minutes, but it should illustrate the process well enough. Pretty much all you need is some masking (should you exclude the lightsaber itself...)

If you have not seen Jedi Knight, Exile or have forgotten what it was about, here's link to it too:

Thanks for watching, and I hope I'm not boring you with these breakdowns. Hoping to have a short film next time I upload something.

Thanks for posting. I enjoy vids that show the principle rather than concentrate on the minutae of how to do it in such and such a package.

How did you separate the body in footage B from the background? Rotoscoping?

    Thanks Tim!

That was simply mask tool. The body stayed quite still and only shifted to the side in the end, so keyframing was simple enough. Masking was actually quite sloppy, I was bit surprised when I opened it again. I guess I realized people wouldn't have time to notice it with smoke and sparks covering parts.

Yes, I like it as well.
