Thread: File format for archiving

  1. #1

    Default File format for archiving

I believe avi is the best format to archive my files from my Mini DV camera for "future proofing". By this I mean the format for archiving to allow files to be re-accessed, re-edited and re-burnt to various media in various formats that the future may provide. Am I correct in archiving in avi?
See you in the green room.

    Default It's probably a good idea ...

... to store them in whatever format you captured it in, which from a MiniDV camera should be DV-AVI. You'll need lots of space, though, depending on the length of your movies.

    Good luck!!

My personal route to backup is as follows.

Make sure I create a batch capture script. Save that along with the project itelf. Delete everything else. As long as I do not record over the original miniDV tape (which I don't as a matter of course) I can recapture it exactly and re-open the project.

Archiving takes much less space that way.

AVI is a generic term to describe a video playable on a windows machine. Do you mean DV?
