Talking Editing h.264 & Premiere Pro CS with iMac

I am slightly new to video editing. I am more new to HD video editing.

I have mkv files that I converted/extracted the h.264 from and am trying to edit/trim clips for a video. In Premiere Pro CS5 I am having trouble with the playback (preview). I am trying to match the video up with music and the videos, even though they are trimmed to about a minute, are not viewable. They simply have a good 10 sec lag.

I do not think my computer could be the problem... it's not the fastest but it has done well for many years.

    Hardware Overview:

    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro

What I want your advice on: Is Premiere a suitable software to use? Is there a better way to take my mkv files and convert them to something else and still keep the quality(1080)?

I am trying to make a video very similar to the Sagan Series (youtube if you have not seen it... please watch it if not, it is beautiful) so timing is very important, if there is an option on a video editor to input the bpm(beats per minute) of a song and edit from there... please please suggest it.

Thank you for all the suggests!

there are some suggestions that i have:

    1. check if your sequence matches with the file you are working with. for example if your video is 1920*1080 25p the sequence must have the same specifications. the way you can figure that out is if there be a red line above your video in time line which means it needs to be rendered then you are working with wrong setting.

    2. try converting it to H.264 which is good format with high quality.

    3. press enter to render the movie so you can have a good preview.

    i hope it helps
