Thread: DVD only plays on certain DVD player.?

  1. Default DVD only plays on certain DVD player.?

Hi I've recently edited a piece of film & output it as avi format using Pinnacle. Then using Tmpgenc encoded it to a mpeg2 Then wrote it out to dvd disc using Tmpgenc DVD author. Theres no main menu or tracks just a few transitions. So why does it work on my Xbox & my mums cheap 30 dvd player & not my Sony dvd player.?

    Thanks John

I have heard of certain Sony DVD players being difficult with regards to reading DVD media before now. I know a couple of people with SOny DVD players that can't play otherwise playable discs. Not really much help I know, but you're not the only one :-/

Some discs are more compatible with DVD players than others. Some DVD players are picky about what media they read.

    A further word on Sony's.

I have what was a hundred quid DVD Sony in my suite. Its great for bought DVDs but pants with anything else. I have also bought a QUALITY (yes, that really is the brand name!) player for less than thirty quid. The Quality plays PAL, NTSC, MP3, JPEG, etc etc, has optical out, 5.1 out, co-ax out and is really cheap and nasty. The flap is rubbish, (keeps falling off), the menu is almost like the old Sega Master Sytem text. But it's a hundred times better than the Sony. Plays absolutely everything....

    Go figure....

I have had the same experience as Turnmedia. Good quality high dollar unit that does not play certain media and then an APEX brand unit that costs no more than $30 play anything and everything I throw at it.

The older units (DVD Players) are the ones that you really have to watch out for as far as compatability issues. However, even the newer units on the market are finicky. :(

My media choice that I am burning my projects on are ALL DVD-R media. Even then, sometimes quality of disk comes into play.

I personally like Verbatim branded media, but that's just my personal preference.

I was forever having problems when I used Pinnacle, (not sure if it was actually Pinnacle, or just me blaming everything that went wrong on Pinnacle)
Use -R if your burner will do it, Its supported by most dvd players,
And steer well clear of RW's +or-.
