Thread: Memory question

  1. #1

    Default Memory question

what would be more beneficial, 8 4gb sticks of ddr3-1600 ram of a total of 32gb in quad channel or 7 sticks of the 4gb ddr3 plus a 8gb stick for the total of 36gb ram. is the quad channel more beneficial or the extra 4gb?

I have the i7 3930k with ssds. This all would be for editing with vegas and AEcs6
    intel core2 i7 960
    16GB DDR3
    Radeon HD6850
    Audigy 2 Soundcard
    2 x 24 Inch wide screen LCD Monitor + 30 inch tv.
TBs and TBs of Storage+ SSD

I would have thought that adding more RAm to a system with 32gb will provide marginal returns. I'd go with the cheapest.

36GB would give you a little more/longer in the way of RAM previews in AE, but as Marc says it's quite a minimal amount, 32GB is a lot of RAM. Also to note, I've not used AE since they changed the way previews work in the new version.

I'd definitely go the 32GB quad channel route and take advantage of the massive speed increase compared to the minimal capacity increase.
