Default What's An Optimal/Practical Scratch Disk Setup?

I'm wondering if it's worth it to get a SSD or just go with a regular spinning drive, and for whatever I choose, if it's better to be internal or external. Also, how big should a scratch disk be usually? I'm going to be working in 720p but I don't know how big my files will be.

My options are as follows: Internal sata 2 SSD or HDD, and external SSD or HDD with USB 3.0.

    Cheapest option.

One drive for the Operating System only.
Then purchase 2 1TB ( 2Tb if you can afford it ) 7200rpm Sata internal drives
Then stripe them together for raid-0.

So long as you maintain regular backups of anything critical, you should be just fine with that option.

I trust you mean OS and program!

I find when rendering that having the destination of a separate drive from the source makes a massive difference. I haven't made comparisons vs all files on RAID0. (I used to have RAID0 and lived in constant fear of teh controller going and me not being able to recover the data from two perfectly good disks! As Bpotter says peace of mind comes with regular backups (and thus more drives)
