This is a long shot, but worked for me when I had a similar problem with a Sony camera.
1. Set the camera to play mode
2. Disconnect all power
3. Wait 60 seconds then reconnect power an try to play/record.
Worth a go if the alternative is £50 per hour
COMPAQ something or other with 500Gb Boot Disk, 1Tb external Firewire Disk, 4Gb Memory and a super duper sound card, 19" TFT Monitor etc etc etc
