Question How to setup a home server for video & image viewing

I want to setup my home server so that I can post my DSLR images and camcorder video for others to view, sort of like a portfolio in one place. All I need now is the software to publish my artwork to the internet visitor. Can anyone suggest good software for this? I'm looking at spending upto about $500 but if there is anything better then let me know and I'll consider it. Thanks.

I assume that this will serve video across the web, rather than on a local network? If that's the case, using a third party such as amazon s3 would be an option: http://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing/. Or using the pro version of Vimeo.

Setting up a home server seems overkill. You'll use up your allowance, requests will hog bandwidth, and third party hosting won't expose your network. It's also likely to be quicker, more reliable and cheaper.

Nothing to add, but just want to second Marc's opinion. Actually it's more than opinion. Do the sums. It's common sense.
