Thread: How to make parts of a video transparent?

Default How to make parts of a video transparent?

One more question, is it possible to erase parts of a video and that way making them transparent? For instance in this video I'd like to erase the white background in the left, right, top and bottom along with the scroll bar, cursor and the top black line (in other words everything except for the website), while keeping the center (the website) untouched. Is this possible in Vegas? Can't find anything of this sort on Google.

    Thanks.

If that's typical of the video you want to do this with, then it's very straightforward with Vegas Pro and possible with Movie Studio.

In both versions you create a "mask" around the bit you want to keep.

Put this track above another (so you can see the effect of the mask)

    Vegas Pro:
On the video on the top track open up the pan and crop. Now look at the bottom - the timeline within the P&C. There's a line for "mask". Check the box and now use the pen tool to draw a mask (just place the points o the corners) around the website part of your video.
    Job Done

In Movie Studio it is still possible as the shape doesn't change. What you need to do here is create an image (in photoshop or a drawing package) which is the same shape as the website. The easiest way is to save a snapshot of your website video, import that into your drawing package and trace arouund it. Make the area you want to show through (the website) pure white and the area you want masked (to be transparent) pure black. place that B&W graphic on the track immediately above the "website" video.
Drop a Sony Mask Video FX onto the B&W mask event and check this is the "Luminance Mask" type.
Now make the website video track a "child" of the track mask trackFinally change the compositing mode (this is the little switch on the track header which has the alpha sine on it) of the uppermost track (the mask) "Multiply (Mask)"

    Job done.

Here's a link to a vid which useds the same approach although here it is done at te track and parent compositing mode level. But the principle is the same. It seems difficult and long winded at first, but once you understand what's going on it becomes second nature.

Nice one Tim. If the object is moving around the screen things get a bit more complicated so bear that in mind when your at the planning stage.

By the way, is it possible to draw symmetrical lines in P&C while creating a mask so you can create perfect squares etc.? Like for instance in Photoshop when you hold down Shift at some tools.

Not exactly, but you can use the X & Y positions of each point to achieve the same effect.

However, I'm a little intrigued as to why you'd want to do this as surely it's more important to mask out an area that you see in the video frame rather than what is a perfect square/rectangle. (Unlesss you are exactky perpendicular to the centre of a rectangular object when filming it, it will not be a perfect rectangle on the screen)
