Use an MPEG4 codec such as WMV or Xvid/DivX. Keep the frame rate the same as your source video, and reduce the frame size by a factor of 2 (if you want). Set the video bitrate as VBR/peak with a target average bitrate of somewhere between 400-600kbits/sec. For the audio use CBR mp3 with a bitrate of between 96-192kbits/sec.

If a video's good, i don't mind waiting to download it before i watch it.

If it's a minute long, i don't mind waiting 2 minutes to download it.

Going by that, i'd happily download your video if it's 50MB.

Most people are on half meg connections (56k-ers shouldn't be downloading videos, and if they do, they shouldn't complain about file sizes) so your video shouldn't be any larger than 7MB.

I've decided to always offer two download options for video. Incidently, and without wanting to hijack this thread, I know you rave about Xvid mrlipring but the 16:9 support is flakey at best. Any idea of how to force a pixel aspect ratio (bearing in mind the majority of playbacks are in WMP).

I don't have a clue, nope. I just googled it, there's stuff on doom9 about it.

TBH, i don't really have a clue about that. What's it for, what's bad about xvid's support for it, why would i use it, etc?

Alas, that doesn't work (note the caveat). That's generally why I stick to WMV.
