    Default transparent mask?

i was wondering if anyone could help,
i'm trying to make a certain portion of a clip transparent.
how would i go about making a mask or something similar that i can put over a clip in a layer making a portion of it transparent?
    any ideas?

assuming you're using premiere, you need to use a matte, the type you'll need will depend on what you want to do,

but basically you create a grey-scale image, making the bits that you want to be transparent white, and the bits that you want to keep black, shades of grey represent equivalent levels of transparency.

I think that mattes work quite differently in different versions of Premiere, so I suggest searching the Help file for Matte, that should get you started.
