Thread: HDV Tape Decks

  1. Default HDV Tape Decks

Maybe this is a bit of a naive question, but why are these things so expensive? I've been looking on the internet and I can't find a single one for less than about 1200. I know that it's a bad idea to use your camcorder as the tape deck when editing, and in the past, it seemed that the solution was to buy a cheap MiniDV camcorder to use as a makeshift tape deck. But nowadays, all of the cheap camcorders seem to be hard drives and DVDs, which kinda rules that out.

So anyway, I was just wondering what everyone's solution is to transferring their HDV taped footage to the computer and back again?

I would use the camera as I don't have any other way of doing it BUT I suppose it depends on things like the volume of use etc.

It was the same with MiniDV Decks. Its a combination of being a bit of a specialised product - there's a much smaller market and, I would hope, these things being built for better durability and/or for access for maintenance.

I think you just have to keep an eye open for a broken HDV cam on eBay (ie one where the sensor or optics have blown but the firewire and tape heads/transport still work.

Or wait for Andy to recommend you get his favourite gizmo of the moment - a Datavideo DN60 - and record to CF!
