Thread: freehand cropping (final cut/after affect)

    Default freehand cropping (final cut/after affect)

    is there a way to crop a frame in a way that is not a rectangular ?

    i am just beginning to edit and i have both final cut pro 7.0.3 and after affect.

    answers will be much appreciated.

    Press 'c' once for the normal 'rectangular' croptool, press 'c' twice for the freehand croptool.
    You can drag the four corners of the clup, if you want you can change them in time by placing keyframes.
    If you have Final Cut Pro then you also have Motion. You can do much more with it. You can compare Motion with After Effects.
    Motion works better together with FCP and is more intuitive.

    I prefer to keep it in Final Cut as much as possible. I don't use any external programs unless I have to. What you can do, is go to effects, under Matte, you can use the Mask Shape filter. This lets you choose a shape, rectangle, oval, rounded rectangle, etc. And you can cange the dimensions and shape of the mask to what ever you need them to be. You can also use the edge feather, and key frame the mask with the pen tool.

    Using a Mask is something else than 'cropping' a clip, and that is what the OP asked. Push twice the 'c' in FCP and you get the 'four corner' crop tool.
