    Default Amazing footage ....

This film, originally thought to be from 1905
until David Kiehn with the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum
figured out exactly when it was shot.

From New York trade papers announcing the film showing
to the wet streets from recent heavy rainfall &
shadows indicating time of year &
actual weather and conditions on historical record,
even when the cars were registered
(he even knows who owned them and when the plates were issued!)..

It was filmed only four days before the Great California Earthquake of April 18th 1906
and shipped by train to NY for processing.

Well I wouldn't call it amazing, but it is a good reminder of why we invented laws against jaywalking. You gotta wonder what happened to that horse and carriage at the end. Looked like quite a squeeze to me.

Is this footage in California, an area that got affected a few days later?

I thought it was interesting how even though there seems to be no order or rules being followed everyone seemed to know what to do. It reminded me of an experiment at a really bad road junction where there was always bad tailbacks etc. So they just turned off the traffic lights and although it looked chaotic the traffic ran smoother with no tailbacks.

just like beauty .... amazement is in the eye of the beholder

i love it, its unusual to see footage from this era in almost real time (though i suspect its slowed down) as apposed to almost double time film we normaly see. I love the combination of the almost relaxed attitude of the pedestrians and various vehicles given the chaotic non existent lane control ..... the music helps it drift along nicely too

That puts a bit of a perspective on viewing. All those people all getting on with their everyday lives none the wiser. Then this a few days later:
