Thread: Editing Laptop

  1. #1

    Default Editing Laptop

    I'm looking for a decent laptop to edit video on; I have no more than 900 to spend. It needs to be as fast as possible, have as much RAM as possible (768mb or higher), and must have firewire. Basically all the specs that are needed to edit with.

    Could anyone suggest anything for me? I'm looking into buying one ASAP so all help will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

    Decided to go with this one: http://www.tiny.com/packages.php?prodid=12773

    Now I have to wait 3 weeks for it to be delivered!

    Nice try . It's an insurance jobbie (my former Dell didn't impact test very well :(), so need to spend the whole 1600.

    Does it have to be a laptop? Better 'voom' for your bucks with a desktop or tower surely?

    It doesn't have to be a laptop, but we may be moving soon to a smaller place and am concerned about the space issue. I also like the idea of taking the computer to bed with me .

    The video editing work is not profession - just family and our car club movies - but would perhaps like to try new things eventually. I have an external hard drive I can stick on if necessary.

    btw - Sorry Dom if I've hijacked your thread - it just seemed since a thread already existed on the topic etc ........... .

    Thanks

    Personally, i'd go for a desktop. More bang for your, erm, pound. If you're concerned about size, you can always get a PC based around the Shuttle systems, or a case like I use at work:

    Which is a nice lickle thing

    As for laptops, generally I'd recommend sticking with Dell, Toshiba or HP. If you're editing, get loads 'n' loads of hard drive space, which, for 1600, you should be able to afford plenty. One thing to watch out for though is, apparently for video encoding, the Pentium 4 M is a lot, lot slower than the desktop version, so if you are getting a laptop, get one with a built in P4 desktop processor. Or, if you're buying HP, I think they do Athlon64 based notebooks, though I may be wrong.

    Yeah, i'd go for an A64 lappie, with as much memory, hard drive space etc as you can get.
    AMD Athlon 1700 (@2200mhz from 1466 sod the noise!) - 768mb pc3200 - 200GB Maxtor - Pioneer 106 - GF4 Ti4200 - twinhan/visionplus pci dvb-t - random pci analogue tv tuner - A7v600-x (to replace the a7n8x-d that died...) - random 17\" CRT
    Sony STR-DE425 & Eltax c205s;
    xBox w/20GB HDD- executer 2.3b;
    xBox - standard;
    Konica/Minolta dimage z10 w/2x512mb SD;
    iRiver h340;
    A silly amount of Cat-5 and usb cables
