Default Macs, external hard-drives and large files

What's the best way to go about formatting an external-hard drive to deal with large (HD) video files on a Mac?

It's already formatted in Fat 32, but Swoopie over in General Software helpfully pointed out that doesn't accept large files. Do I have to buy the NTFS compatibility software? Is there another option?

Why don't you format it with the regular Mac OS Extended (journalled is optional) ? This gives you native Mac OS support and large file support. All my external drives are formatted like this.

Yup David's right OS Extended is the way to go, NTFS is for PC Fat 32 is useful if you have a drive that you switch between Mac & PC
