Default Premier 7, Canon HD vid camera, poor quality on DVD??? Help!

So, I just bought a new laptop with dedicated video (nvidia), Canon Vixia HFM31, and just installed Premier Elements 7.
Camera direct to TV= excellent quality
I am using the provided USB to transfer video from camera to laptop, mild edit in Elem7, burn DVD, quality is worse than my old Handycam mini DV would put out.
I am playing DVD on Bluray player.

Would get better quality to use the HDMI cable to get from camera to laptop (rather than the USB)?

I don't see alot of options in Premier to select quality at output (either DVD or Bluray). CanI or should I change format when putting it on the DVD (if so, how do I do that)?

    Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    Rob

Okay then... no reply so left to my own experimentation. Video-ed the kid's football game last night. I changed several camera setting and pushed the slider to high quality in PSE7, made a DVD, played it in the Bluray player and much, much improvement.
I would usally close with "thank you" but...
