Dave: what, 'external' as in connected via Firewire or USB rather than mounted in the case?

I don't want the recorder mounted in the case, but to be outside the computer, connected by USB or firewire

Right. Well, I've had good experience with Freecom and Iomega external drives - I haven't used their external DVD writers, but I've owned an Iomega ZIP drive and a Freecom external CD writer, and both were excellent. Of course, their heritage is in external drives. Looks like you can get 'em from Dabs for around 80.

I used to use an Iomega Super Multi Drive (USB2) DVD+/-RW and it was a good steady performer. That was until I got my Ritek DVD duplicator.
