Thread: Any type of Vegas-- .mkv files

  1. Default Any type of Vegas-- .mkv files

Is any version of Vegas, any version at all, compatible with .mkv files? I have a bunch of videos that are in crystal-clear 1080i hi-def, but they're .mkv so I can't edit them in Vegas. I'd hate to have to learn a new program just to use these clips.

    Advice?

EDIT: Also, I've tried converting the videos, and it greatly degrades the quality.

No. However, and from what I have read, the MKV stands for MatrosKa Video files. The Matroska is that multi-layered Russian Doll that are dolls contain every smaller Dolls in diminishing sizes. So, the MKV file is a container, much like a AVI or MOV file., but MKV files are files that contain ALL the DVD chapter, Menu and so on info - but in one stonking file. So, having this container you can move it from place to place and have all your info ready at hand - yes?

    Moving on . . .

Again, and from what I just read/learnt, VIDEO media is not a MKV, they are contained WITHIN this useful MKV container - your task is to liberate the content from that container.

How to Convert MKV to MPEG on Windows 7?

So the first trick is somehow deconstruct the MKV so you can get at the VOBs or MPEGS or whatever.

Here might be a useful link. WARNING: I have NOT tried this s/w:

DVD-Guides.com - How to extract video, audio or subtitles from a Matroska (.mkv) file

Has ANY of this been helpful? I'm not sure it has . . .

^ Much thanks. It appears that Pavtube is a very good MKV to WMV/MPEG converter. It converts the clips nice and smoothly and they don't lose quality.

    Very much appreciated.
