eh ^ yeah has it just started acting up or is it always like this?
is your video preview settings normally on best-full or best-quarter
if so change it to preview-auto its not a good quality preview but atleast
    the outcome is ;] <3

I presume you are trying to edit some form of HD video. There are a few things you can do to try and optimise your lap top but it will never run as smooth as your desk top PC.
    1. Don't have anything running in the back ground like email, anti virus, etc
    2. Make sure your disk is defragmented regularly.
    3. Start your editing program from a fresh reboot.
    4. Keep the preview at the "preview auto setting for the smoothest running. You can turn up the preview quality for colour correction if needed.
    5. Try and keep FX, transitions to a minimum, I would just do straight cuts and then do the fancy stuff on the desk top.

There may be other things you can do but I've run out of ideas.

Provide us with all the types of Media on your timeline.

Have you matched your media to your project settings? If not start off by doing the following:

File | Properties | "Match Media Settings" (folder icon)

Browse to Media you are using and "Open". This will then configure your Project to Match the Media you are attempting to edit, and consequently will give you the best shot at getting the best fps.

also, sort of related question- i'm not really sure how to ask this because i know all programs are different and use different terms

but reaper has something called "apply track fx to items" which basically renders the item on the timeline with the fx. i'm trying to find something like this in vegas that renders the fx/transitions/fades quickly to lighten up the cpu load working with a lot of different video and fx
