Default gigabites file size for 8 seconds of video

Hi I have posted the same question deep in another thread, so at the risk of being irritating I am posting it again here.
I am rendering 8 seconds of normal resolution video and getting 13 gigabites of file size, I realised that I had rendered maybe a couple of hours of black screen, but didnt notice on playback as the screen was..well black.
How do I get Vegas to just render the few seconds I want?
I am using Vegas 9 pro.
