Has anyone used a Zoom handy recorder for the recording of live bands?
Or have any general feedback on any of the handy models?

I've not used the H1 but have used the H2 and H4, both of which gave excellent results and were easy to use. The inbuilt microphones are very good, within limits, not as good as a decent stereo pair but well up to the job. Since 99% of the art of music recording is microphone placement, if you can get the unit in the right position, it'll do you proud.

Gaffer if you were to score the H2 out of 10, compared to a more intensive setup, what would you give it in your experience?

    It's all relative.

It's a recorder, so it will record whatever signal you give it. If you have a decent microphones, going through decent pre-amps and a decent mixer, and are looking for "CD" quality, then it will do the job.

If you bung it at the front of a choir, on a stand, in a decent hall, at the right height... The inbuilt microphones will do a fair job.

Like any tool, it's how you use it. Placed in the auditorium at a rock concert to get a bootleg, it won't be up to much.

The H2, H4, R-09 etc are all pretty close together in quality.
