    I am a little confused.

Surely GIGO applies whatever the playback mechanism. I appreciate different systems (even different monitors) will display differently, but the implication is that mid-tones should be deliberately darkened when a film is converted for viewing on home DVDs. Is that actually done?

I am also confused over the audio advice. I don't think all the audio should have the same (consistent) loudness throughout the video. Sadly, TV broadcasters appear to apply compression to all their audio output. Whilst this makes it easier for viewers who watch TV with talkative families, it destroys the dynamics in footage of Orchestras; where even a solo triangle comes across as loud as an entire brass section. A useful rule of thumb may be to know what the acceptable difference in dynamics should be used. A few db or a few dozen?
