Default Cutting bits out of .avi files

Hi very new to this and would value some advice please, I record my fav programs from Sky plus onto a DVD and then rip them to an .AVI file via Magic DVD, this works fine, however most of the progs have adverts in them and I would like to chop them out, is this possible?
I really would prefer not to have to pay for software to do this, would Windows Movie Maker do this
    Thanks in advance
