Default Putting my 8 mm to my sony vaio

I have a sony vaio laptopand i have like 12 hi8 tapes , I want to put in my laptop so, I can put them on my computer and burn then to a dvd.

What is the best and hopefully the cheapest way to convert my analog tapes to digital via putting them on my vaio?

Some say to buy a converter for $70 that has a RCA and USB ports and put the tapes in my analog camcorder and connect the RCA cables to it and connect the converter to the computer via USB-then transfer.
But , I am thinking dont I need special software

What is the best way to do this?

Also, I am buying a Sony HC30, any opinions on it. I was thinking of getting the Camcorder Sony 101 but several people I taked said not to ,that I had more flexibility with the mini dv than the camcorder dvd.

You could lawys look for online reviews, like this one

    http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content...der-review.htm

Other than that, if it is your intention to edit your Cideo Footage on a PC, then I would go with a mini DV model.

COMPAQ something or other with 500Gb Boot Disk, 1Tb external Firewire Disk, 4Gb Memory and a super duper sound card, 19" TFT Monitor etc etc etc
    Sony TRV33e : Sony TRV310e : Canon XM2
Sony Vegas Studio editions to v11

Remember, there is always more to learn than there is to teach.

Default I read the reviewnot too glowinf 4 the HC 30

I wonder if the pros outweights the cons and if there is an advantage of having a sony laptop and a sony camcorder?

the article recommends the panasonic pv-gs 14, any has opinions on it?

My original question of transfering 8mm to laptop, i read that the sony hc 30 has analog to digital feature, can i do that with this feature?
